Encouraged by his early success, Columbia Pictures offered Seuss a contract for a feature-length, live-action musical with a budget of more than $2 million — an amount usually reserved for Disney juggernauts like "Alice in Wonderland" or "Cinderella," and equivalent to roughly $20 million today.
